WAYS TO SERVE

JAIL PROJECT

Travis County Correctional Complex

For a number of years members of Church Women United in Austin have led incarcerated women in the three celebrations, World Day of Prayer in March, Friendship Day in May, Human Rights Day in October and World Community Day in November, at the correctional complex in Del Valle.

The services are modified to fit into an hour program and are adapted to include small group Bible study by the participants.  More familiar hymns are used.  Hymn singing is a favorite part of the afternoon, both before and after the service.

Those who participate must be pre-cleared with the Sheriff’s office.  To be included, contact Sue Sidney, 259-8623 or suesidney@aceweb.net.

Community Service:

CWU maintains the Lucille Mayberry Memorial Sewing Rooms, initiated in 1948, which continues today with dedicated volunteers; each year we donate lap robes, pads, and quilts/comforters for adults and babies through local charities.

Volunteers are welcome.

The Sewing circle meets at  Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd.

Thursdays, 9-11 a.m.   Contact Coordinator Peggy Maxwell, 338-0406

Volunteers also sew at other locations in churches.

Community Involvement and Global Outreach:

CWU Austin has maintained a unique relationship for many years with organizations that educate, feed and heal residents of a diverse community.  With prayer and personal commitment, members seek to develop a better understanding of global needs and environmental concerns.  We seek to build relationships with Christian women in other countries.  We hope to gain a better understanding on global issues such as fair trade practices, equal wages and human rights for women and children.  CWU members have provided many volunteer hours of service to local nonprofit organizations.  Our members frequently serve as committee chairs and board members for organizations vital to the well being of the community.  If you desire additional information on a specific project or organization, a partial list of contacts is provided for your convenience.   Please contact a CWU Officer for phone numbers/emails of these representatives.

ONGOING PROJECT

Recycle batteries and printer cartridges;  bring to meetings.

At the beginning of each month's newsletter there will be a monthly project listed.  These projects allow members to provide donations of clothing, food and other goods to a specified charitable organization each month.

These take the place of an annual fundraiser.  Suggestions for worthy projects can be made to Pat Thomas, 441-1495
